tDB Pre-Show Video & Photos

The Disco Biscuits - 4.24.2009 @ Madison Theater - Covington, KY

Here is a pre-Madison tDB video from 22 January 2009 in Madison, WI. I was unable to attend this show, but was lucky enough to be at the show a few nights later in Chicago at the Congress...sick! Check back in a few days for an article on the Madison show and some sweet photos from your boy Tim Hara.

The following video features a 3 min 55 sec clip from the Biscuits version of "Digital Buddah" from 1.22.09. The jam is sick and you can hear it well, but the video quality is mildly ok. It is, however a great version to check out to get pumped up for tomorrow night.

Check them out live tomorrow at the Wisconsin Union Theater in Madison with the following opening DJ ine-up:

"Got A Blank Space Where My Mind Should Be"

So I, just like most live music fans, check out the local message boards. A lot of the ideas and expressions that are posted on these boards are down right raunchy and/or unfriendly; many times completely unrelated to music. Some of the posters are not cool, most of them are cool enough to be your best friend, and some of them are straight up hilariuous. Recently, I have read some posts that make me LOL (pun intended). I have a pretty good sense of humor and it is those funny posts that have inspired me to begin my first column on LMS called, "Got A  Blank Space Where My Mind Should Be."
My plan is to dig up a funny piece that I find on a message board (one that is frequented by Live Music Peeps) and share it with you.  This weeks piece comes from the Disco Biscuits area of PhantasyTour.com, posted by member, zestypancakes. As a quick disclaimer on my reputation, I need to let you know that I do not support the ideas or crazy ass shit expressed in this post...I just think it's funny.

1) Skater shoes: These wide, soft, and durable shoes help the average Disco Biscuits fan stay on their feet while dancing around in circles to repetitive music tripping on DMT.

2) Baggy Jeans rolled up above the ankle: Bisco lots can get muddy at night, and as most Bisco kids only have one pair of jeans, rolling them up will ensure that you wont have to do laundry until the next time you go home broke and burnt out, to explain to mom why you left college to "go on a Bisco tour."

3) New Era Fitted Cap: For those fashion conscious Disco Biscuits fans, a fitted cap is a great way to both disguise the hair you haven't washed since the Pittsburgh show two months ago, and send a hint that although you may look broke, your parents do indeed live in Fairfield, Connecticut.

4) Disco Biscuits hoody: "In case anyone was curious, yes, I like the Disco Biscuits. See? I bought a hoody. I wear it everyday."

5) A crystal or two around the neck: you know, like, for the energy and stuff. One should never ruin themselves with drugs and alcohol following around a band named after ecstasy without a very powerful prayer crystal. You might be liable to miss the next show, due to an overdose caused by a lack of positive karma. "Dude, this crystal really works! I was up all night last night drinking whisky and swallowing Kolonopins, but I got out of bed no problem this morning!"

6) Mom's credit card: Although a few industrious Bisco fans do support themselves by slingin' crystals, artwork, drugs, or food, the vast majority are funded by private donations from their parents. Without the generous assistance of moms and dads all over America, tour kids everywhere might actually have to get jobs. Good thing we live in an age of affluence and gluttony, because Dad is too preoccupied about getting rims for his new H2 Hummer to worry how his son is spending his trust fund.

7) Brain corroded by ecstasy, hallucinogens, pharmaceutical, and lots of nitrous: The only way to really enjoy the Disco Biscuits for more than ten minutes.

8) The sniffles: No matter how much you love the Disco Biscuits, the scene can cause terrible problems to ones health. Waking up in a filthy motel room surrounded by ten to twelve other Bisco fans, one is lucky to walk away with merely a head cold.

Boo! Where Will You be Spending Halloween?

Halloween has quickly become the second largest live music holiday behind NYE. This year's spooky holiday is one of the best fans have seen in several years. Pretty much anyone and everyone's favorite band will be playing somewhere. The tricky day also opens up the opportunity for bands to do things that are out of the ordinary. You know, wear costumes, play a themed show, or cover a strange album as Phish will do. There are even a few huge festy's over the weekend. Phish and their Festy 8 will basically be the spot, but Las Tortugas isn't far behind. The only problem with that is that it leaves us mid-westerners and east-coasters with a hefty bill to see either of these Cali based fests. Thank Jah that the Disco Biscuits LOVE Chicago!
So where will you be on Halloween? Here is a list of your favorite bands and where they will be. You can go check them out, but be scared, be very scared...crazy, boogyman things happen on Halloween and you will most definately have to go outside after dark if you hit one of these spots.

Papadosio CD Release Party - Photos from Matt Speck Photography

Papadosio @ Newport Music Hall, Columbus, OH 10.23.3009
Matt Speck Photography

Papadosio raged the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH this past Friday (10.23).  I was unable to attend this CD release party for their new album, Observations, but luckily my homie Matt Speck made it and he got great shots of both dosio and their supporting act, The Werks.

Papadosio is defiantely worth checking out.  They are a very progressive band that mixes the highlights of several genres to create a very jammed out, usually up-tempo, contemporary, real instrument electronica.  The Athens, OH natives claim that they are, "on a path to combine rootsy eclectic traditions with modern electronica," and that they are "striving to bring [their] musical vision to everyone with an open mind."  Sounds good to me.

Seriously, if you are into bands like the Disco Biscuits or STS9 you will have no problem rocking out to Papadosio.  They definately have some flavor of their own to add to the genre. Check out this soundboard of a recent show that they have posted on Archive.org. It is from The Dive Bar in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on 15 August 2009.

Setlist:  The Curve, Unparalyzer, Snorkel, By The Light Of The Stars, track 5, All I Knew, The Plug, Improbability Blotter, Polygons

Check out how the singer stresses the word "Blotter," when he introduces the song "Improbability Blotter." I noticed the song title immediately when I pulled up the show on Archive. This is a great version of the tune.

Here are Matt Speck's Photos of The Werks, the opening act for Papadosio at the Newport Music Hall - Columbus, OH 10.23.09

Pretty Lights Review and Photos from Park West 10.23.2009 Featuring Bonus Shots From 10.22 By Tim Hara

Pretty Lights @ Park West, Chicago, IL 10.23.2009

Tim Hara Photography - Pretty Lights 10.22.09 & 10.23.2009

I rolled into the Pretty Lights show Friday night with more on mind than just having a good time. I had to figure out what all of the fuss was over this DJ & Drummer duo. I am still a little bitter over the fact that I missed their set at Camp Bisco 8 this summer. It was cold and rainy, and I (just like many others) fell asleep in my warm, dry tent. For the better part of the next day you couldn’t go far without being asked what you thought of the Pretty Lights set. Fans were freaking out over them almost as much as they were over the Biscuits. Although I was happy to hear about some new, fresh live music on the scene, I was pissed that I missed it!

I got a pretty good indicator of what was to come when I stepped up to the front of the Park West Theater in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. Kids were walking around 2 & 3 blocks from the venue looking for tickets. It was sold out tight. The PW is a pretty small venue, but it is definitely the plushest spot to see a show in the city. It is nothing like the dingier venues…The Vic, The Riv, The Congress, and the list goes on and on. To get to the main floor of the intimate 750 person capacity theater, you have to step down 2 levels of 2 – 4 person reserved booths. There is a good size lane where partiers can get down in between booths, and they come complete with a team of servers eager to bring you the next $6 bottled beer of your choice. The disco ball that hangs below the creative globe in the ceiling and the screens around the upper level both catch lights to make the already sweet venue glow with goodness.

Following openers, Dark Party, synth dude extraordinaire, Derek Vincent Smith hit the stage with his drummer Cory Eberhard at around 10:30. The LCD screen behind the stage lit up with the Pretty Lights logo and the fans shouted out a warm welcome. There was a very festive attitude parading about the crowd. A lot of people were dressed in their raver’s best neons, glow sticks were prevalent and bugged out eyes above jacking jaws were everywhere. The crowd was a bit more mature than I expected with the median age being somewhere in the early to mid 20’s. On the contrary, I did hear a group of girls in front of the venue speaking with disgust about a group of scantily clad young hotties. “There is no way she’s 18,” one girl said to the other. I stepped in the conversation and laid out the facts and said, “but you know her ID says she’s 22.” They laughed.

Smith has amazing stage presence and makes controlling the crowd look as easy as LeBron makes a slam dunk look. Rocking back and forth to the beat in front of multiple laptops and musical tools that I don’t understand, he rocks the house with various bass heavy jams that have a progressive Hip-Hop presence. Some of their tunes are instrumentals, some have jazzy soul lyrics, some have rhymes and some have female vocals. I’m pretty sure that Smith even busted a beat (you know, BeatBox?) a few times during the night. They hit various styles of funky dance beats, always making the entire crowd wiggle like worms.

Early on during the show a recurring theme kept hitting my brain. I couldn’t stop thinking about the old break dancing pop movies of the 80’s called, Breakin’. I loved those movies and noticed the break dancing capabilities that Smith brings forward with his beats. They have that snappy beat with driving bass and a bunch of complimentary humns and electronic taps. Yet Smiths take has built greatly upon the electronic aspect of the originals. He knows just how to morph a beat and drop it down before bringing it back into his fans faces. I watched the packed crowd all night, scanning for the best dancer. Despite the very danceable beats, the closest thing that I saw to break dancing the entire night was when a chic tripped over a step in front of the bar. She sort of spun around and I was hoping that she would break into a windmill. It didn’t happen. She got right up and exclaimed, “I’m OK.”

The scene that PL sets with their stage set up is completely satisfying in itself. They have an array of pastel colored lights that scan the crowd in different constellations. But the real treat is the huge LCD screen behind the stage. It lights up with various themes that almost seem to control the beat. They had blue skies with white, puffy clouds, fires blazing and an array of flashing colors and psychedelic designs. The screen makes any seat a good one because you can always at least see the profile of the artists in all their creative glory. When you put that background behind tunes like crowd favorite “Finally Moving,” there is almost no where else that I would rather be.

Someone also threw out a slew of glow sticks on the main floor. Glow stick wars rage, but apparently no one told that to the PL fans (or maybe there weren’t enough Phish kids in the crowd this night). Everyone bumped heads while bending over to get a stick, but not one was thrown in the air. It was a great idea and would have added to an already sick scene.

My prayers were answered. Not only did I have a great time, but a hyped up group in the live music scene met the expectations that others have set forth for me. That doesn’t always happen. I saw the self-promoting Smith, hoodie hood up, don a hat that hosted a glow-in-the-dark “PL” Pretty Lights logo with a white towel swinging from side to side around his neck. I loved it. Despite the packed venue, the fans created a welcoming scene, kept it friendly and danced their asses off. Selling out any venue in the Chi shows that you have made it; Pretty Lights has to be stoked right now. It looks like the next time they come to town it will have to be for 2 nights. .

Pretty Lights Tonight in the Chi

Check out Pretty Lights tonight at the Park West in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of the Chi.  Show time is 8:00 pm.  I am super pumped to see what the big fuss is over PL.  Derek Vincent Smith has become known as some what of a God over the past year after making appearances at several large festy's this summer.  Many times he was given the late night spot that allowed fans to rage to his version of electronica/hip-hop/trance mash-up into the wee hours of the morning.
The show will be sick.  No worries for those of you who already have plans.  Just check back to LMS in a few days and we will have a bunch of photos from the show with a written account of the evening.
The following video clip pretty much lays out what you can expect from PL tonight.  Check it out!

Dr. Fameus in NYC tonight

Dr. Fameus at Camp Bisco 8 this summer in New York

Dr. Fameus is performing tonight at Club Rebel in NYC for a STS9 afterparty tonight.  DF is the Disco Biscuits drummer, Alan Aucion.  It is his solo, side project.  Many fans may shy away from watching a drummer play solo. Even Grateful Dead drummer, Mickey Hart, always had a host of musicians and drummers present in his side projects.  I urge you to not shy away from a DF performance.  Alan puts out more sound than some 12 piece funk ensembles that I have seen.  His drum kit intermingles synthesizers and lap tops to give him the extra 10 hands that he needs to make his creation.  You do need to beware of the volume though.  Alan keeps it up there pretty high, but the beats are so tight that after a few minutes you don't even notice that your eardrums are numb!!  He will also be performing with Two Fresh, Welder, Sub Swara, and more!!!

Check him out tonight at:

SCI Set to Release New Live Album

The String Cheese Incident is doing all that they can for CheeseHeads that are awaiting their next incident.  So, in an effort to suffice fans they are dropping a Halloween treat a few days early.  On October 27 they will release Trick or Treat.  The nine disk treat is comprised of hot tracks from SCI Halloween shows in days past.  Shows used for the album are:
Atlanta's Variety Playhouse (1998)
Philadelphia's Electric Factory (1999)
Portland, Maine's State Theatre (2000)
New York City (2001)
Shrine Auditorium (2002) in Los Angeles
Sin City's Cox Pavilion (2003)
the Exhibition Center @ Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin (2004).

All of the band members are also busy with side projects.  Bill Nershi has recently released an album with his Emmit-Nershi band dubbed New Country Blues.  Keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth released Then There's Now, and drummer, Michael Travis, is scheduled to release and album with his 2-piece electronica group EOTO.  Hopes of a Halloween surprise SCI show can be put to rest since Nershi is performing in Montana and EOTO is performing in Kansas on the holiday.

Indy Rages!!

The Disco Biscuits at the Egyptian Room 1 July 2009

Our friendly neighbor to the South is quickly becoming known for more than race cars, football and fighting basketball players.  Yes, Indy Rages!!  Indianapolis actually has a great music scene and a few nice venues to support it.  One of the sweetest rooms to see a show not just in Nap-Town, but also in the Mid-West is the Egyptian Room at the Murat Theater.  It is a grand ballroom whose decor sticks closely to it's name.  Beer drinkers can also bask in the 24 oz cans of Budweiser that they hook up for around $6, not a great deal, but better than the Vic!  Don't let the cavernous stage fool you...the Egyptian Room puts out great sound and most shows run until midnight.  It is also in the midst of hosting a nice line up of bands that you will want to see.

Matthew Speck Photography - Umphrey's McGee 10.8.2009 Cleveland, OH

My buddy Matt Speck was kind enough to share photos that he took of Umphrey's McGee at the House of Blues in Cleveland, OH a few weeks ago (8 October 2009).  Matt is an up-and-coming photographer and a Mid-West Peep.  You can most definately expect to see more of his shots at LMS.  You can also check out all of his work on Flickr just click here: MattSpeck.  Thanks Matt!  Enjoy...

Check out this audience recording from the same evening (C-Town HOB UM 10.8.09).  It's a really good version with pretty low crowd interference.

Carribean Holidaze Quickly Approaching

The annual, all-inclusive Rasta bash featuring the Disco Biscuits and Umphrey's McGee is set to be a rage fest at Runaway Bay, Jamaica December 10 - 14.  I have never had the opportunity to attend, but from what I hear they make it a live music fans fantasy event.  When fans decide to take a little rest they do so at all inclusive resorts Hedonism III & Breezes.  This is also where the music happens.  One of my buddies who is a regular told me that he recently sold his car to make the jaunt to the islands this year.  His favorite aspect is that you can hear the music and watch the lights while wading in the ocean.  Need I say more?  They also have all sorts of activities planned for fans, many of which open up the opportunity for fans to intermingle with band members.  It is a bit pricy ($995 - $1845 for rooms, not inuding air fare), but they make sure that you get your money's worth.  A 10% discount of air fare is also available for select departure citites.
Some of the activities that they have planned are:
  •  Swapapalooza '09 - Fans are encouraged to bring old clothes to donate to a charity in Jamaica.  But wait!  Before you donate you have to rage Swapapalooza '09 in the Disco with UM bassist Ryan Stasic.  Simply put on some of the old dudds and when the siren sounds on the hours half, you trade an article of clothing with a fellow fan.  This will be repeated until all fans are wearing a completely different outfit than they started with.
  • Poker With Barber - Play a game of Texas Hold 'Em with tDB guitartist Jon "the Barber" Gutwillig.  I have heard that he is a pretty solid gambler, so bring your A game.
  • Marley Tour with Brownie - Hop on a tour bus with tDB bassist, Marc "Brownie" Brownstein, and cruise Bob Marley's old stomping grounds (there is a fee for this activity).

  • Breathe In, Breate Out - All yoga enthusiasts will be happy to learn that it will be available this year!!

The resorts also offer more than the music, drinks and food.  Cloud 9 Adventures encourages fans to peep out all of the activites offered by the resorts.  You know, scuba diving, horse riding, rip cord rides, etc.

Empire State Building to Honor the Grateful Dead

If you will be in the NYC area this evening you will most certainly notice that the Empire State Building is carrying a different night-time look.  It will play canvas to an array of lights that will make it look tye-dyed in anticipation of the New York Historical Societies new exhibit The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New York Historical Society.   Bobby and Phil are also set to attend a benefit dinner at the society on Wednesday, October 21st.

The exhibit will trace the 30 year history of the Grateful Dead by presenting an array of artifacts including show posters, stickers and fan art just to name a few.  Nearly all of the artifacts were borrowed from the Grateful Dead Archive.
I also received an email from Mom at the Woodstock Trading Company.  They carry a huge selection of band regalia and are pretty pumped to have the 2010 Grateful Dead Calendars.  Check them out at: Woodstock

DMB set to hit Europe in 2010

Dave Mattews Band is set to hit Europe for an extensive tour that will take up most of February and half of March in 2010.  He has not, however, announced the New Years Eve dates that fans are anxiously awaiting.  Although I have attended thousands of shows in my short life, I have only been witness to a DMB experience one time.  I just so happened to see the Rothbury set in 2008...who couldn't have a sweet time there?  It was a great show despite the throngs of people steadily pushing us from our spot near the stage.  Hey now world travelers, check them out (I plan to) tour dates below:

STS9 - The Genesis of Ad Explorata (From the Band)

Here is a really tripped-out, cool article that STS9 wrote about the concept for their new album. If this story is true, it is the most amazing basis for an album...ever. If not, it's still pretty sweet and has alreaady motivated me to hook up their new effort, Ad Explorata, when it comes out in November.

Santa Cruz, CA… 10/06/09… A family member of ours has a shortwave radio that we have all been messing around with. We had been using it for sound effects and noises when one day it was left on in the studio. Keyboardist David Phipps’ daughter Aya was playing around with the dials when all of a sudden it stopped on this voice on the super low frequencies of the spectrum. It was a woman’s voice, artificial we later found out, counting off numbers in a very clear and concise way. We became obsessed with what we had heard and for weeks we sat behind the dials trying to find more voices.
There was only one more to be found, the voice we sampled for the beginning of the song “Central”. After a bit of research, we found that these were numbers stations, thought to be coded messages various governments use to send correspondence to spy’s overseas. This of course isn’t publicly acknowledged by any government, even though in 2001 the United States tried the Cuban Five for spying using information they supposedly received and decoded by broadcast from a Cuban numbers station.

STS9 has always been fascinated by numbers; finding this transmission captured our imagination so much that we had to see if there was something more to what we had found. Immediately we enlisted the skills of a crypto-hacker friend of ours to see if she could find any relevance to the sequence we had recorded. When she ran the numbers as coordinates corresponding to a map of military bases in California, she came up with an exact location in Big Sur. We immediately went to check it out and sure enough there was a trail about 10 miles back off of Nacimiento Road, just south of the park that led to this old abandoned bunker type structure. It was crazy. We were all looking at each other in disbelief but there we were. We crawled through a hole at the bottom of the fence and walked inside. There we found a rusted metal box that had a few pictures, documents, patches, passports, and a knife in it. The first picture was of a document from Allen Dulles to J. Edgar Hoover on brainwashing. The second was of two men standing over a map of the Middle East. That image became the cover of our first single “Atlas,” off the upcoming release Ad Explorata. One of the patches we found was the most intriguing of our finds. It had this physically impossible symbol on it that looked futuristic next to all of the older documents. It’s the symbol we’ll lay over top of every image you will see for the album. In doing some research, we later found an old book of ‘black ops’ military patches at the Prelinger Library that had a brief description of this patch. It was thought to be for a secret unit that first used satellites to gather SIGINT (signal intelligence) from other countries during the Cold War. The story is that this team actually gathered signals from another civilization in our galaxy. Their motto was ‘Ad Explorata, Forward into the Unexplored.’
We’re not ones for conspiracies but sometimes the truth is stranger than anything we could imagine. With this, we present to you STS9’s newest studio release Ad Explorata due out November of 2009, inspired by the idea that there is always more to be discovered, manifested by the belief that you can always push towards the unknown and unexplored, and created by the will and desire for constant artistic evolution, expression and change.
