Lotus @ The Vic Theater - Chicago, IL - Tim Hara & Aaron Bradley Photography

Lotus @ the Vic Theater - Chicago, IL - 11.27.2009 Tim Hara Photography

Lotus played a much anticipated show at the Vic Theater in the Chi on 11.27 in the newly partying spirit of Thanksgiving. Bands always rage the Chi, but lately, who hasn't? It seems like every band, both well known and trying to be well know plays an amazing show when they come to Chicago. From the looks of the setlist, Lotus joined the club last Friday.
Here is the list - thanks to Lotusvibes.com:

11-27-09 Vic Theatre, Chicago, IL
1: Grayrigg, Simian, Nematode, Invincibility Of Youth, Livingston Storm, Golden Ghost, Tarasque, Age of Inexperiance
2: Juggernaut, Hammerstrike, 128, Did Fatt > Intro To A Cell, Blacklight Sunflare, Spiritualize
E: Marisol, Flower Sermon

I will bring you audio when it is posted. Keep an eye out!! Here are more pics from Aaron Bradley Photographie. Make sure that you check out both sets of pics. Each photographer brought his own ideas and angles to the show, but they both came out completely amazingly.

Greensky Bluegrass @ The Livery 11.25.2009

Greensky Bluegrass raged The Livery Brewery the night before Thanksgiving. Aaron Engler was there with me and he got the following shots. Nice work Aaron! The show raged. They play a sweet mix of traditionals mixed with gnarly covers and a bunch of originals. Big up to mandolinist Paul Hoffman for writing and singing some sweet lyrics. Greensky has an amazing mix of musicians that are a perfect bluegrass set up for fans of bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead. Their infuluences shine in the deep space jams (yes I said SPACE JAMS in the midst of a bluegrass article) that pop up during GSBG shows. You definately have to check them out.

Check out Aaron's shots, they will be posted on jambands.com with my review. I will post a link to jambands when the article and pics go up.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all. It has been a wonderful year so far and hopefully today was an awesome time with families and food for everyone. I, personally, am very thankful that you are reading this right now and would like to just say Thanks!
Holiday season 2009 will certainly go down in history as one of the best ever for live music. The Disco Biscuits are going to let their food digest and then do their traditional holiday run in Philly. Oh yeah, then we have Phish in Miami for NYE. I'm working on getting myself down there as we speak! Might even see some of you in Cali for Furthur. Some of the best gifts that a live music fan could ask for. Greensky Bluegrass was a blessed blow out at the Livery, look out for my review with Aaron Engler's photos on jambands.com soon.

And once again...Happy Holidays

Enjoy these pics from the last time that I saw Greensky Bluegrass in Ann Arbor, MI on 4.4.2009

Furthur - Christmas in Spring

You thought Christmas was coming up in a  month didn't you? It is, but for DeadHeads across America, it will come again beginning February 5th and will last until March 8th when members of the Grateful Dead and other acclaimed musicians hit the stage as Uber-Dead cover band Furthur. The Dead was great this spring. Who doesn't want to see the boys back together? I do, however, feel that Further is the most honest attempt at recreating the sounds of the Grateful Dead (notice that I did not say the "experience" as I have not seen them).
The band is pioneered by guitarist Bobby Weir and Bassist Phil Lesh. Phil still drops bombs and Bobby is still Bobby minus frequent haaah's. Jay Lane (Ratdog) and Joe Russo (a host of bands, mostly Benevento/Russo Duo) hold down the rhythm section and Jeff Chimenti (Ratdog) tickles the ivory. The member that I feel makes the most sense in the line up is the addition of John Kadlecik from Dark Star Orchestra. This guy has DEADicated his adult life to mimicking the exact sounds of Jerry Garcia down to the effects that he uses.
The tour is not truly in Dead fashion though. There are only 2 multiple night runs, 2 nights in NYC at Radio City and 2 nights in Chicago at the all of a sudden super popular Auditorium Theatre. Other stops of note include the space ship, also known as Hampton Colliseum and several under the radar stops like the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, DE. They are playing venues large and small, but every show is sure to be special. They will have some pretty huge shoes to fill after the raging Phish tour that is currently under way. We miss you Jerry, but we know you are there in everyone's heart and spirit.

The Disco Biscuits 11.21.2009 - The Fillmore - SF Kelsey Winterkorn Photography

My buddy Sammy from http://www.phishandthedead.com/ sent me over a few pics that his friend Kelsey Wintercorn took while they were covering the Disco Biscuits last Saturday at the Fillmore in San Fran for the second night of a 2 night performance. Many in attendance felt that it was the night of choice between the 2. I always leave that up to you and only you. What I may see as a shitty performance, others may see as a jewel; reinforcing the point that music is as special as that feeling that you have for your mommy! You can check out a quick blurb that Sammy wrote on his blog at: The Biscuits. Thank you Sammy and Kelsey!!

Lotus Video - Milwaukee, WI 10.24.2009 - RECshare.org

Brad Johnson and Eric Rejman from RECshare.org were kind enough to share yet another sweet video that they shot. This time it was from Lotus in Milwaukee, WI on 10.24.2009 at the Turner Ballroom. It is a glimpse into the instrumental, rock-electronica world of Lotus as they performed "Shimmer and Out." The video is amazing quality and the jam is great. It goes from island type jammed out beats into some serious guitar rocking. Multiple camera angles help to you get the Lotus experience from your computer. Thanks Brad and Eric...enjoy!!!

Pretty Lights NYE Show Sold Out!

The Pertty Lights show in October at the Park West was a success. It sold out tight, and there were very few tickets available outside the venue the night of the event. Apparantly the performance was so stellar that anotther 800 fans purchased tickets to sell out the 1,400 seat venue, The Vic Theater, in 20 minutes!
With much appreciation on the surprisingly quick sell-out, Derek Vincent Smith released the following statement to his fans:

"I want to thank everyone personally for making this show sellout so quickly. It only took 20 minutes for all 1400 tickets to be gone. Actually, I continue to be surprised by the amount of support that Chicago shows PL. Thank you again. I am very excited to make NYE a unique & intimate experience for everyone involved, so prepare, let's make this a night to remember."

Umphrey's NYE Shows in the Chi & Tammy Wetzel Photos from UM 11.18

Umphrey's McGee - 11.18.2009 - Water St. Music Hall - Rochester, NY

Chi-town boys Umphrey's McGee will let the good times roll in Chicago for at least one more New Years Eve show. This year's event will be split up between two venues The Vic Theater on Dec. 29th and the beautiful Aragon Ballroom on the 30th & 31st. Both Venues have hosted UM for the holiday's events in the past. The Aragon looked like it would be the long term NYE home for the boys after they spent three years in a row there with multiple night runs from '05 to '07. They flipped the switch last year and hit up the Auditorium Theatre for the first time.
This year will be the first time that UM has ever done a NYE run at more than one venue. Fans should not complain though...the Vic only holds 1,400 people and is considered a very intimate venue for a band of Umphrey's stature, especially in their home town. Good luck getting tickets for that one!! No opening act at the Vic, But Z Trip and Prefuse 73 will open on the 30th and 31st respectively.
Here is a list of UM NYE shows of days past:

2000 - The Cubby Bear - Chicago, IL
2001 - The Vic Theater - Chicago, IL
2002 - The Vic Theater - Chicago, IL (2 nights)
2003 - The Vic Theater - Chicago, IL (3 nights)
2004 - The Riviera Theater - Chicago, IL (2 nights)
2005 - Aragon Ballroom - Chicago, IL (2 nights)
2006 - Aragon Ballroom - Chicago, IL (3 nights)
2007 - Aragon Ballroom - Chicago, IL (3 nights)
2008 - Auditorium Theatre - Chicago, IL (3 nights)
2009 - The Vic (1 night) & The Aragon Ballroom (2 nights)

Phish - Cincy Weekend

Wow! Phish steamrolled Cincinnati Friday and Saturday nights. It's difficult to compare the nights to choose a champion. Each night was blazing and had original greatness in it's own unique way. "Fluffhead" to close the first set Friday was as much of a surprise as it was perfectly performed. The deep, dark, spaced-out jam that broke between "Rock & Roll" and "Ghost" was true Phish 3.0. Playing "Axilla I" for a fan with a sign on the spot for the encore was appreciative. It was a full circle of energy and should be a pretty good glimpse into what we can expect for the remainder of 2009 from Phish.

Here is how each night played out (thanks PhantasyTour.com).

11/20/09 US Bank Arena, Cincinnati, OH

Set I: Chalkdust Torture, The Moma Dance, The Divided Sky, Alaska, Water in the Sky, Fast Enough For You, Time Turns Elastic, Gotta Jibboo, Fluffhead
Set II: Punch You in the Eye, Tweezer> Light> Back On The Train> Possum, Slave to the Traffic Light, You Enjoy Myself
Encore: Joy, Golgi Apparatus, Tweezer Reprise

11/21/09 US Bank Arena, Cincinnati, OH

Set I: Wilson, NICU, Wolfman's Brother, Ocelot, Torn and Frayed, Strange Design, Ginseng Sullivan, Albuquerque, Split Open and Melt, Dirt, Limb By Limb, Run Like An Antelope
Set II: Rock and Roll> Ghost> If I Could> Backwards Down The Number Line, Prince Caspian, Suzy Greenberg, Also Sprach Zarathustra, The Squirming Coil
Encore: Sleeping Monkey, Axilla

BassNectar Video - Grand Rapids, MI 11.3.2009 - The Intersection

Midwest based photographer, artist and videographer Brad Johnson was awesome enough to share a video that he created from BassNectar earlier this month in Grand Rapids, MI. Check out all of his work at: RECshare.org. Peep this video though. It is serious high quality and has a few different camera angles. He caught the excitement and energy that exists between Bassnectar and his fans. Thanks Brad!

Phish: On the Road Again

Phish Darien Lake - 8.13.2009 - Tammy Wetzel Photography

It is soooooo nice to be able to write about current, active Phish tours. The drought (or hiatus) is over and they are back in one of their phinest forms ever. They performed last night in one of my personal favorite cities, Detroit at the old school venue, Cobo Arena. Cobo is from the days of the LA Forum or the Hampton Colliseum and was a must play back in the day as well as today. Kiss recorded their album Alive,  at Cobo in 1975 and played a large roll in making the spot "famous." Unfortunately, it will be but a speck of history in the near future as it looks like it will be shut down.
Phish departed from the cliche and did not rock any Kiss in the Rock City, but they did play a solid show. The show was reminiscent of a sick late 90's setlist apart from a few of their newer tunes that were played in the first set.

Here is the lineup from Cobo yesterday:

Set One
AC/DC Bag
Foam
Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan
Bouncing Around The Room
Sample In A Jar
Kill Devil Falls
It's Ice
Horn
Mountains in the Mist
Poor Heart
46 Days
David Bowie

Set Two
Runaway Jim
Down With Disease >
Free
Waste
Taste
Bug
Wading In The Velvet Sea
Mike's Song >
I Am Hydrogen >
Weekapaug Groove
Cavern

Encore
Character Zero

I will be bringing coverage of the upcoming Cincinnati shows. Don't forget to stop by the Waterwheel table and support local non-profits and/or hook up a chance to win a signed poster if you're lucky!!

Here are the remaining tour dates:

11.20.09 U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, OH - Limited Tickets Available

Bassnectar 11.7.2009 - Detroit, MI Saint Andrews Hall

Bassnectar Detroit, MI 11.7.2009

Detroit, the self-proclaimed home of electronic music, warmly welcomed DJ Bassnectar and his grimy grooves to Saint Andrews Hall November 7th during his mission to promote his new album Cozza Frenzy. It was the DJs first appearance since he performed this summer at the annual Detroit Electronic Music Festival. I was unable to attend DEMF this year, but a lot of my D-town homies made it just for Bassnectar. According to them, his set was for real.

My only Bassnectar experience came the day that I heard of him at Camp Bisco 6 in 2007. I stepped up to the hill stage to peep his set and was more than overwhelmed. I expected a trance DJ. What I got was a super high energy set filled with mashed up, intermingled genres and a bunch of long hair flailing in the wind. Needless to say that set placed pretty high expectations in my mind for this show in Detroit.

Saint Andrews is as much Detroit as electronic music, car jacking and horrible football teams. It is always a mess to get into because it has another popular club beneath it and the single entrance hosts both spots. The line was long and confusing, but moved pretty quickly. It is an old ballroom type venue; large flat, rectangular dance floor with a balcony that covers three sides but only holds a few rows of partiers.

Bassnectar hit the stage a few minutes after 11:00 to a wall shaking rumble from the crowd. He had a massive set up that included a plethora of turntables and mixers sandwiched by laptops at each end. A huge screen filled the empty space behind him and scrolled various designs and themes that ranged from shots of planet earth to 3 headed alien figures and anything else that you can imagine in between. He got right down to business and after a trancy mix of busting bass loops went into a Justin Timberlake beat that was laced with Bone Thugs and Harmony’s “Thuggish, Ruggish Bone” lyrics. I instantly realized that even though you hear recognizable lyrics and beats during his sets, there is a much more complex take on them. I can only describe the tracks as having been “Bassnectared.”

My friends told me that Bassnectars set would be hot. I didn’t realize that I needed to take them literally. It must have been 120 degrees in the completely over packed venue. It was so humid that my camera lens stayed fogged over every time that I tried to take a few shots. Some fans were walking around with no shirt on (unfortunately I only saw dudes shirtless), and everyone was covered in sweat. The $7 giant cans of PBR couldn’t even keep the sweat from pouring. Although he asked the crowd “Isn’t it hot as fuck in here,” the heat didn’t prevent Bassnectar from running side to side mixing and twisting samples with original material.

He went from a poppy hip-hop theme into a reggae mixed with hip-hop theme. He sampled lyrics by artists like Missy Elliot, Kid Cudi, the Fugees and Rob Bass just to name a few. Hip-hop appeared to be the preference of the evening but it was creatively mixed in with signature crunched up and spit back in your face ripping bass lines with trancy undertones. He also dropped some originals and a few new tracks from his most recent album. My buddy Dave put it best when he looked at me during a Lil’ Wayne sample and simply said, “Space age shit.” A few minutes later the screens behind the stage showed a clip of a space shuttle lifting off. Ironic? I think not!

As the evening wore on the crowd maintained the same excitement that it had from the beginning. Glowsticks were flying around the room and occasionally caught a beam from one of the many in-crowd lasers that were focused on the disco ball above. After a sweet mash-up of the cult classic “I Got Five on It” beat with the Fugees “Ready or Not” lyrics, Bassnectar announced a 10 minute warning. Shit got really hype at this point and he continued forward with the hip-hop theme for the last few minutes of the show. Snoop Dog’s “Pump Pump” filled the house and made the crowd go crazy yet again for one of the biggest highlights of the evening. He went into Missy Elliots “Work It” beat under some lyrics that were unfamiliar to me, but sweet and interesting to finish the night off. A certain success.

Bassnectar brought his version of electronic music complete with his signature convulsive, inverted bass lines and all that nice noise in between. I expected to hear more genres focused on than the primary reggae and hip-hop that was choice this evening, but was certainly not let down. You can easily see that he loves what he is doing just as much as his fans love it. Detroit, I suppose, was not unlike most other nights on this tour; an evening of unfamiliar familiarness. Check out his website for a free download from the new album Cozza Frenzy, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Pretty Lights Hitting Up Chicago for NYE

It looks like electronica producer extraordinaire Derek Vincent Smith and his drummer Cory Eberhard must have had such a great time last month at the Park West that they have decided to give the Chi another try. Yes, they will be brining in 2010 with 2 sets at the Vic Theater in Chicago for New Years Eve.
Although the Vic is not nearly as luxurious as the gnarly Park West, it holds nearly twice the capacity. If you were at the PW, you saw first hand that a larger venue was very necessary. The Vic has a large balcony and seats nearly 1,400 live music fans. It also boasts great sound, perfect for a PL show.
The Chicago show announcement does, however beg the question why not Colorado? PL is a Denver based group and the music scene there is as hyped as Chicago's if not even a little more. My guess is that it was a late announcement that left them with no larger venues to play and that both STS9 and Yonder are already holding Denver down. A year ago PL would have most likely opened for STS9. This year they are well deserving of their own 2 set spot.
Check it out. The first set is their premier feature of a down tempo set, exclusive for NYE. Here are the show details:

The Vic Theater - Chicago, IL. Doors will open at 7:30pm, ages 18+. Tickets are $35 and include a complimentary champagne toast at midnight!

Umphrey's McGee 11.11.2009 - Toronto, ON - Tammy Wetzel Photography

Umphrey's McGee 11.11.2009 - Tammy Wetzel Photography

Umphrey's McGee hit up the Opera House in Toronto, ON last week. My homegirl Tammy Wetzel (see ArtGrrl banner to the left, click, then buy some sweet digs. OK?) was able to make it. Lucky for us, we get to see her point of view. It looks like a sweet venue and an above average show. "2nd Self" opened the first set and "Wappy Sprayberry" opened the second. Set openers are always indicators of just how good a show really is or isn't. These two songs alone tell me that it was a sick show, not to mention that Canadian keyboardist Jamie Shields (New Deal) also nabbed a guest appearance. From the looks of the crowd shots, the Canucks agree! Enjoy the amazing angles that Tammy has hooked us up with...thanks Tammy!!!

Bluegrass Thanksgiving in the Midwest

Soundboard recording of Greensky Bluegrass at Hornings Hideout 7.17.2009

Now that all of the Halloween dust has finally settled, we have another holiday to look forward to. Wait...before you start planning your NYE trip, don't forget about Thanksgiving. Normally turkey day is not well known for a plethora of live music around the country, but this year in the midwest it is. Greensky Bluegrass is hooking up another installment of their holiday "three legged turkey" bash. This years show will take place in Benton Harbor, MI at award winning brewery (and sweet venue) The Livery on Wednesday November 25. Mike Struwin will take care of the opening duties.

Then on Thursday you need to nurse your hangover from the hoe down time that you had at GSBG, eat some turkey (or tofurkey) and spend a little bit of time with your family because you will have plans on Saturday with Cornmeal. Yes, Chicago has more than sports teams, DJs and Umphrey's McGee, it also has bluegrass. Native act, Cornmeal, will hit the stage on Saturday Nov. 28th at the Vic Theater. Halloween with the Disco Biscuits

So you thought that my boy Tim Hara was just a photographer didn't you? He has recently began focusing part of his efforts on writing about the shows that he shoots, which I know from experience is another beast. Here is his account of what went down at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, Il complete with the way he saw it. Thanks Tim.

Sweet recording from Nick Colovos - tDB 10.31.2009
Everyone inside the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL knew that they were in for a special night. It was the first time that Philadelphia natives, the Disco Biscuits, would play a Halloween show in Chicago. It was a big deal. The venue was absolutely stunning. An old opera house that has been operating for almost 120 years; huge murals painted on the walls are surrounded by intricate, ornamental carvings. The sound is loud and crisp and there are great sightlines from virtually every seat in the house. The highest of the multiple balconies made the performers look like ants on stage. No fans ventured that high unless they wanted to. The orchestra level and first balcony were completely filled with kids in their wildest costumes. They anxiously awaited the tricks and treats that the Disco Biscuits had up their sleeves.

After Holy F*ck and The Glitch Mob opened things up with some early dance parties, the Biscuits took the stage dressed as classy zombies. Their costumes were complete with suits and lots of fake blood. It seemed as though they were amazed to be playing in such an awesome venue. They opened the show with a stand-alone instrumental, “Strobelights and Martinis.” Its dark theme was appropriate for the holiday. This version was solid but straightforward without much of a jam. Next came a new song called “Pimp Blue Rikki.” Guitarist, Jon “Barber” Gutwillig sang over a slow, repetitive riff in this tune. The jam was short and didn’t venture beyond the song’s boundaries before an awkward and abrupt ending. “Flash Mob” was next, which is another instrumental that has only been in the band’s repertoire for a few months. Bassist, Marc Brownstein put down his bass and cued eerie samples of a woman’s voice on his laptop. The pace was slower and had a similar sound to Sound Tribe Sector 9. It was a short and sweet jam…nothing to write home about.

The music basically came to a stop as the four noodled their way into the opening notes of “Mindless Dribble.” Now was the chance for the band to get into their groove after a pretty sluggish start to the set. The crowd pumped their fists in the air as they sang along to the chorus. After the bouncy “Apple Butter Toast” section, the boys quickly got down to business. Barber lead an explosive jam with some great interplay by keyboardist, Aron Magner before slowing things down into a segue of “Caves of the East.” It was another appropriate instrumental with a truly dark and evil theme. The band did not include the hip-hop samples that they have in previous versions. Instead, the Biscuits got creepy with Barber producing some spacey effects with his pedal board. This was unmistakably a “Halloween Caves.” As the band moved out of the Caves, the tempo sped up and the fans anticipated a return into “Dribble.” Again, the four were completely locked in as they prepared to finish the song. After the ending of “Dribble,” they kept the energy soaring with a wonderful transition into the ending of “Confrontation” to close out the set. This was easily the highlight of what was a pretty average, but solid first half.

After a huge dance party during set break provided by Bethany Lokken and Ben Silver of Chicago’s own DJ crew, Orchard Lounge, the band came back on stage with copies of their new EP, On Time, to hand out to the crowd. They opened the set with “Stone” > “Devil’s Waltz” to give the fans a glimpse of their older, classical side. Both songs were well executed, but did not include much improv. After “Waltz,” Brownstein said, “That was one of our oldest songs and now here’s one of our newest.” “On Time -” No surprises there! Even though the song is complete with poppy, auto-tuned vocals ready for the radio, it has gotten a pretty good reception from the fans. It’s hard to deny the catchiness even if it is quite a deviation from the Biscuits’ normal songwriting. The jam that followed was on point and with a purpose, as they tore through it in typical Bisco fashion.

The transition into the beginning of “Confrontation” was a bit shaky, but the band quickly made up for it with the improvisation that followed. Without losing a beat, Marc dropped the signature bass line of “Spraypaint” and the rest of the band followed suit. After Barber sang the first few verses, they begun the jam without finishing the rest of song. Starting off quiet and patiently before building into the instrumental, “Tempest” with Allen Aucoin providing the backbone on drums under Magner’s spacey, synth leads. As quickly as it came, “Tempest” was over, and the Biscuits continued to tear through this segment with a drop into “Tricycle” that seemed to come from nowhere. Even though the song only has the same few lines repeated over and over, it is a crowd favorite and never ceases to lack in energy. This too ended quickly and the boys seamlessly segued into another patient jam. This one was fun with all the members backing down to let Allen drive it home with a bouncy beat. Barber picked up the tempo and lead the band into a scorching finish to “Spraypaint.”

Finally the band stopped to let the crowd catch their breath after a non-stop marathon dance party that clocked in at over 50 minutes. However, the set was not over. It was Magner’s time to shine as he sang about “livin’ as a private eye” in “Spy.” After this inspired rendition, another song started up. It took a minute for the crowd to realize that the Biscuits were paying tribute to Chicago’s Smashing Pumpkins as Barber sang “I Am One” to close the set, all the way back from 1990. The crowd exploded in approval as the band exited the stage one last time before the encore.

The boys started up the beginning of “Save the Robots” and everyone knew that this was not going to be a run-of-the-mill encore. This was a dyslexic completion of the song as they played the ending the night before in Minneapolis. The jam dropped quickly and they wasted no time getting down to business. The crowd was surprised one last time and roared with excitement as the band transitioned perfectly into the ending of “Run Like Hell” to complete the version from Kalamazoo, MI three nights earlier. A very solid finish to the evening.

Overall, the second set and encore were much more focused than the first. “Spraypaint” > “Tempest” > “Tricycle” > “Spraypaint” was easily the best improv of the show and a perfect example of what the Biscuits are capable of when they are 100% locked in. However, nothing was going to take away the fact that the Disco Biscuits were playing an absolutely gorgeous venue in one of the country’s best cities. Everyone inside the Auditorium knew that it was a special evening to witness and they truly seemed grateful for the opportunity. They were respectful of the venue and its staff members and not once did it seem as though they were being burdensome. Let’s hope the Disco Biscuits family will be invited back again next year!

The Disco Biscuits - 10.29.2009 - Madison, WI

The Disco Biscuits 10.29.2009 Madison, WI

Kevin Hughes Audience Recording of tDB 10.29.2009

The Disco Biscuits made a pit stop in Madison, WI while raging their Planet Anthem tour across the country. Madison is in very close proximity to Chicago where just 2 nights later the second most hyped Halloween show in the live music scene would take place. A few of my homies showed concern before the show. Would the biscuits have their sites set on the Chicago show and look past Madison? My prediction was NEVER!

The Wisconsin Union Theater sits directly in the midst of the UW campus, just off to the side of the trendy college downtown area and directly on the shore of beautiful Lake Mendota. It is a gigantic lake and it sets the stage for a pretty sweet view from the entrance of the venue. The Union does not just sit near campus, it is also part of the University. Despite the amazing view on the way in, the venue itself is sort of bland. Picture that 300 person biology lecture times 3. You know, not so comfortable seats and everything is the same color…in this case beige seats, carpet and walls. The sound, however, was pretty damn good.

I had a long haul to Madison, so I missed opening UK DJ extraordinaire OTT of Simon Posfords Twisted Records label. Luckily I walked in about a minute deep into the opening song, “42.” The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy refers to the number as “the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything else.” That must have been an inspiration for the lyrics when bassist Marc Brownstein sang, “I ask that question to myself I don’t know what to do. Chin is rested in my hands, I feel like I’m on 42.” During the jam in “42” guitarist Jon “Barber” Gutwillig bent over and made a feedback noise with his pedals. It was very subtle and added to the rhythm of the jam.

Next, they played “Konkrete,” a song from their new album On Time. It’s unique, spoken opening lyrics paved the way for an interesting rock jam at the end. After a quick pause they began “7-11” and the light show kicked into high gear. There were star shapes rotating on stage during the sick, extended dance jam.

The level of unpredictability is one of the things that keeps me coming back for more of the Biscuits. Fans get to hear songs played inverted, dyslexic or hear only partial sections of some. Following “7-11,” old school tune “Little Betty Boop” came in. Only the middle part of the song was played and it was done with a very funky, bluesy theme. After ending the set with “Sound One,” mid-west DJ, Orchard Lounge hit the stage for set break. It’s always pimp to have another act play during set break, and it looked like all of the non-smokers stuck around for Orchard Lounge. Good idea!

The second set kicked off with another new tune “Donde,” but went into overdrive after an amazing “Minions” when they went straight into “Helicopters.” Staying true to the very electronical undertones of “Minions,” “Helicopters” hit some serious techno jams that included space ship lift off effects. The jam went from high to low, fast to slow then up, up, up and up. I thought I was going to see aliens or something (and apart from 2 beers I was sober!!). Intense, to say the least, and perfectly placed in the middle of the second set.

Barbers winding guitar riffs wound steadily with drummer Alan Aucoin’s beats to take “Copters” into a short but very sweet 5 minute “Little Shimmy in A Conga Line.” Keyboardist Aron Magner took over with some screeny keys to make the segue complete. In true Bisco fashion they kicked into a group effort spit the catchy “Hey little baby…” lyrics and played the ending only. New tune, “Loose Change” followed. If you don’t already like this one, it will grow on you. It follows that super, mid-90’s alternative style that is present in several Bisco hits. It almost sounds like a song you would hear the Smashing Pumpkins play, but twisted into something much more complex. Give it a chance.

You have to respect the Biscuits…they love to play for their fans. After completing the second set, they took one of the shortest set breaks ever and capped off an already flawless show with an encore to match. Although the boys slowly worked their way into it, fans freaked out, put their heads down and kept sweating as soon as the opening licks of “Gangster” hit their ear drums. This version was highlighted by the fact that it sounded like Magner was playing 15 different keys (who knows, maybe he was) before Barbers signature guitar kicked in. They finished “Helicopters” and called it a night after a 15 minute, 2 song encore.

Yes I. The Wisconsin Union Theater brought us another installment of Bisco in all of its insanely confused cross genre, progressive glory. Big up to the kids dancing in the aisles working it out with me and to the cool ass security guards that only made kids throw their party favors out instead of their stuff and them!! The entire Planet Anthem Tour has raged and despite what some may have thought, the Union Theater was no exception. Neither was the next show or the next. They’ve done it again. At what point does the creativity and desire to cut the edge for your fans stop? I don’t think the Biscuits themselves can answer this question, so don’t even try. Just go to the next show and see for yourself. I’ll see you there….

Check out Phish.com to see the new intro. a tie-dyed, flashing palm treee turns into a view of the Miami, FL skyline from the ocean. They have kept it coming for the entire year of 2009. I used to have sleepless nights wondering when, if ever, they would reunite...then they did. Now that they are back, I find myself having what I call pre-tour anxiety and pre-show set list anxiety. They are Phish inflicted illnesses that we all have and they have laid them on us thick this entire year. Luckily each tour or run has come with a grand announcement on Phish.com and they have quickly provided setlists, even to our phones. Things have also been kept exciting with all of the trickery and guessing games that came with 8.

Festy 8 Photos - Welcome A. Hill Photography

Phish Festy 8 - 10.30, 31 & 11.1, 2009 - A. Hill Photography

Festy 8 was a little over a week ago and I still can't get it off my mind...and I wasn't even there. Physically! I have listened to the supreme quality that they exuded with such a group effort. Things sounded different in the same way. Festy 8 is where Phish proved to themselves that they could recreate their sound while still playing a lot of the same songs.
The extended acoustic set was way hotter than I ever dreamed. It included songs that you wouldn't normally consider as a choice for that type of set. They did them flawlessly. Make sure you check out the "McGrupp," just to mention one.
Festy 8 did not only have 4 sick musicians, but it also entertained some damn good photographers. Andy Hill was one of them and he is sharing his take on the event with us. The slideshow above has a large number of photos so make sure you watch the progression from the beginning of the legendary event through it's balloon bomb completion.
I would like to welcome Andy to the LMS team of contributing journalists. You can see him shooting shows primarily in the North East. Based out of Albany, NY, he has been shooting bands for about 6 years. His hunger for live music developed when he saw his first (of many) Phish shows during their summer tour in 1995. When asked about asked about his passion he says, "It has been a hell of a ride so far and I look forward to keep on capturing the magical moments that we all chase around this great land!!!" Well put Andy. It is a great land and we are all chasing memories. Wheather we remember them or not is another story!!

Above and Beyond @ Crofoot in Detroit this Thursday

A Dog with A Smile DVD
UK Djs Above and Beyond will be rolling through the D this Thursday as they continue on their tour promoting their new album Anjunabeats Vol. 7. The video above is a clip from the bonus DVD that comes with the 2 disk set. If you have not seen this DJ trio you are missing out. They have been ranked #4 DJs by DJ Magaizine in their annual top 100 DJs list for the past 2 years. The fact that they make music that just so happens to be electronic is what separates them from their competition and allows them to hook up a tight connection with their fans. Above & Beyond member Tony McGuiness says, " We're a group. And what we're trying to do is exactly do that, connect with people. You try to describe something in your own life, but in a way that will resonate with other people. When you see people singing along as passionalely as they do, I guess you're getting it right."
If you can't hit up the Detroit show, maybe you can catch them at one of these spots:

Another S2 Event for Umphrey's McGee

Umphrey's McGee announced another episode of their S2 experiment today. This time it will be held at the 9:30 club in Washington DC prior to their scheduled performance on 11.21.09. They released the following statement today. Be sure to scroll down to the tourdates and keep an eye open for more of these intimate S2 events. Fans seem to love it and it is quite obvious that the band does too.

First, Check out this video of the first S2 in Milwaukee:

Umphrey's S2 Milwaukee, WI 10.3.2009

Umphrey's McGee has never played by the rules. Now, with the unveiling of their all- new Stew Art Series (aka, "S2") - an interactive fan experience where audience members "conduct" the band's live improvisations - Umphrey's McGee continue to offer their fiercely loyal fanbase the most innovative musical experiences available. With recent S2 events in Milwaukee and Portland (Oregon), next on the itinerary is November 21 at Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club, before their evening performance.

Hosted as individual events before that evening's already schedule show, Umphrey's Stew Art Series is a crowd-sourced improvisation experiment, in which all the music performed by the group on stage will be entirely directed by S2 audience members.

The first few S2 events have been received with overwhelming enthusiasm and to rave reviews, including recent coverage in Billboard Magazine. Look for S2 events to be announced in select markets throughout 2010.

For S2, sold-out crowds of 50 fans submit their ideas by texting descriptive words, phrases, and pop culture references (pretty much whatever came to mind), to the Umphrey's Mozes mobile interface. The suggestions are then filtered by the band's long time Sound Caresser Kevin Browning and projected on a screen for the band to digest and turn into the next phase of the jam. The band's music varies stylistically with suggestions ranging from "an afternoon bus ride in Jamaica" to "drinking pina coladas...in a hurricane". As one elated fan commented after a show, "S2 was the coolest thing I have ever been a part of. It's always been a dream of mine to meet the band, and the opportunity to participate in leading the Jam for the band was a dream come true as well."

As highly skilled improvisational musicians known for using a complex set of signals on stage to prompt spontaneous musical changes, S2 is proving to keep the band on their toes as they navigate through the audience’s prompts. S2 events also include a Q&A session providing an opportunity for fans to ask about what they’re witnessing (or ask anything else for that matter). As part of the ticket (which is actually be a custom laminate that is different for each S2 event), every attendee receives an autographed CD of the Stew Art Series they attend - minutes after the event has concluded. To be clear, each S2 show is a TOTALLY separate event than the scheduled concert date and will be sold as a separate ticket - getting a ticket to S2 does not get you into the show later that night (and vice versa). The S2 experiment is just that, an experiment. Keyboardist Joel Cummins explains, “The improvisational elements of our show have always been one of our favorite parts about playing together - and we think the audience feels that way, too. That’s our inspiration for the S2 series. It’s also a great way to stay on top of our chops.” S2 events take place in the early evening before the respective show start times. Prices and ages vary from show to show - which should last one hour (with Q&A).

This is not the first time that Umphrey's McGee has taken new approaches to delivering their music to the fans. Before their latest studio recording, Mantis, was released in January of this year, the group made the album available for pre-order in an interesting way. Fans were offered more free bonus content the more Mantis pre-orders were received; as the fans "unlocked" levels of content by getting more of their friends to pre-order the album. The idea was to give the fans incentive to help spread the word about the album, and to offer a totally unique music experience.

But it's always been about experiencing Umphrey's McGee on the concert stage, and the group recently announced a string of fall dates, including some final festival stops of 2009 - Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival, moe.Down, and Telluride Blues and Brews, plus a special Halloween performance in Yosemite, California. And to get yourself in the right frame of mind for the upcoming tour, you can check out the recently-released live DVD, Umphrey's McGee - Live. Recorded during their 2007 performance for PBS's Soundstage, Umphrey's McGee - Live is offers an incredible 13-song set on DVD, including six favorites not shown during the PBS broadcast, which premiered last February.

Lotus - Town Ballroom - Buffalo, NY - Tammy Wetzel Photography

Lotus - 10.30.2009 Town Ballroom - Buffalo, NY - Tammy Wetzel Photography
I have this wierd sort of special place in my heart for Lotus. Not just because they are amazing, but I live about 20 minutes away from where these guys met will all of their instrumental glory. Apparantly Goshen College was the spot. I find this as sort of odd having grown up in the area. I guess it would also be sort of odd that I went to both grade school and high school with Jake Cinninger (Umphrey's McGee), and that Brendan Bayliss is also from a near by hood. No one (except for me) thinks about things like this while listening to UM or Lotus. I'm either wierd or very fortunate! Enjoy the shots....Thanks for the pics Tammy!! Make sure that you check the fan pics out at the end of the slideshow. The 3 for 10 balloon costume wins my vote as the best lot costume EVER!!! I want to look at that dude and go, "wah wah wah."
