STS9 - Aragon Ballroom 8/21/2010 - Brad Johnson Photography

My homie Brad Johnson is one of the hardest working music photographers/videographers in the mid-west. The pics that he hooked up here, from STS9's performance at the beautiful Aragon Ballroom last month are spectacular. Check back soon for some of the video work that he does for RecTV. I will be posting high quality HD videos of Big Gigantic, EOTO and a scene from the Wicker Park Festival in Chicago. Thanks Brad - can't wait to see more fresh shots!

Check out Phish's new marketing venture - LiveBait Vol. 1. Either they feel that they are not selling enough copies of their live shows, or they just want to share the love. I choose to believe the latter! This is a stellar mix of songs, in full, from the first part of Phish Summer Tour 2010. Check it out, then either download a few songs or wait until you get one of those emails with SBDs of the entire tour on MegaUpload! Either way, just enjoy.

Phish Fall Tour 2010 Dates Announced

Phish announced their upcoming dates for fall tour 2010 today with this nifty, informative video. Check it out:

Umphrey's McGee Announces Fall Tour Dates and Prepares for Halloween 2010

Umphrey's McGee - 7/30/10 - Cape Cod - Adam Childs Photography

Umphrey's McGee is stoked to announce what they have so far for Fall Tour 2010. From the looks of it, I would say that we may see more dates announced in the Southeast following Bear Creek in November. That's just a guest, but I know from experience that it's hard to leave Florida in exchange for the Windy City in Novemeber! Make sure that you also peep the sick shots that Adam Childs hooked up of UM from their performance out east on July 30. Nice work Adam!

Here is what UM released today (tourdates are at the end):

After a summer of much-praised high-profile festival performances, pop prog rockers Umphrey’s McGee heads indoors this fall to play in many of the country’s most beloved theatres. As always, along the way Umphrey’s continues to raise the bar for fan experiences, with their innovative and interactive Stew Art events planned in at least a few markets, and an incredibly creative first-time offer of “Enhanced Experience” fan packages for their always-epic Halloween Monster Mash-Up in St. Louis on October 30 and 31.

Media and fan reviews from Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Gathering of the Vibes, and All Good all confirmed, there is good reason that Umphrey's McGee has become a standout festival favorite, garnering coveted performance slots playing in front of the country’s largest audiences. Now, Umphrey’s takes their much-hailed live show indoors to venues in the southeast, Midwest and western States. The band’s complete fall tour schedule is listed below.

For this year’s Halloween Monster Mash-Up at St. Louis’ Pageant on October 30 and 31, Umphrey’s McGee unveils another unparalleled fan-centric experience - their “Partyin' Peeps Enhanced Experience” fan packages. Package amenities include express entry into the venue each night, a limited edition Halloween Jeff Wood 3D hologram poster, VIP area access with private cocktail service, an exclusive piece of Umphrey's McGee Halloween merchandise, a private post-show party, and more. At the Platinum Partyin' Peeps level, fans get a chance for them and twenty of their friends to have their own private dressing room backstage, a private meet and greet photo session with the band in costume, a tour of the Umphrey's McGee bus, and more. Visit http://www.umphreys.com/ more all the details.

Umphrey’s McGee’s will host their Stew Art Series (aka, “S2”) – an interactive fan experience where audience members “conduct” the band’s live improvisations - in at least of few markets along the fall tour. Presented as individual events before that evening’s already schedule show, Umphrey’s Stew Art Series is a crowd-sourced improvisation experiment, in which all the music performed by the group on stage is entirely directed by S2 audience members.

S2 events have been received with overwhelming enthusiasm and to rave reviews. For S2, sold-out crowds of 50 fans submit their ideas by texting descriptive words, phrases, and pop culture references (pretty much whatever comes to mind), to the Umphrey's Mozes mobile interface. The suggestions are then filtered by the band’s long time Sound Caresser Kevin Browning and projected on a screen for the band to digest and turn into the next phase of the jam. The band’s music varies stylistically with suggestions ranging from “an afternoon bus ride in Jamaica” to “drinking pina coladas…in a hurricane”. As one elated fan commented after a show, “S2 was the coolest thing I have ever been a part of. It’s always been a dream of mine to meet the band, and the opportunity to participate in leading the Jam for the band was a dream come true as well.” Stay tuned to www.umphreys.com for confirmation on S2 fall events.

Moon Taxi - Live Performing "All the Rage" - HD

Moon Taxi - "All the Rage" - 24 July 2010 - Exit/In Nashville, TN

Speaking of Moon Taxi - check out this sweet professional HD shot of them performing what they call a "New Song" with "All the Rage" at the Exit/In in Nashville, TN. These guys are sick and the quality of this video does them justice.

Moon Taxi - Fall 2010 Tour -

Moon Taxi - The Hangout Fest, Gulf Shores, AL May 14-16 2010

I had a chance to check out Moon Taxi while I was at cool, 1st  year festy - The Hangout Fest. The festival featured some pretty big names - Trey Anastasio, John Legend, Zac Brown Band, The Pnuma Trio, The Roots, Gov't Mule and the list goes on. It took place on the non oil soaked shores of Alabama. It was great.
What I didn't exprect was to find a new band that I liked so much. Well, that is what happened when I saw Moon Taxi. They are a 5 piece group of southern boys from Nashville, TN. They have a great, fresh, full sound that is not like what  you would expect from a southern rock band. They are not an Allman Brothers cover band by any means. They have a contemporary rock/dance rhythm that is laced with carribean undertones and amazing timing. They have a gracious, feel-good stage presense and are working diligently at creating something revolutionary while at the same time familiar.
I was excited to check them out when I got home from The Hangout and I found this tight Moon Taxi SBD on Archive.org. Give it a listen and hit them up at one of their upcoming dates listed below:

Welcome Ryan Martin to the LMS Team - The Heavy Pets 8/20/2010 - The Culture Room, Ft. Lauderdale, FL - Ryan Martin Photography

The Heavy Pets w/ Trip Don't Fall, The Funky Nuggetz and Stampede Movement- 8/20/2010 - Ryan Martin Photography

I would like to welcome South Florida based photographer Ryan Martin to the LMS team. Although an experienced photographer, Ryan is just beginning to get his feet wet with music photography. That makes us super lucky from the look of his shots! Take your time and check out the extensive slideshow from the Heavy Pets at the Culture Room last Friday night.
The Heavy Pets are single handedly helping to create a live music scene in the Sunshine State. They are bringing the popularity that they have gained on the East Coast and through playing festy's back home. Local bands such as the 3 they played with on Friday night are greatly benefiting from the hype surrounding THP. Big up to THP for revolutionizing the way Floridians get to hear local music and for sharing their fans with other local acts. Definately check these guys out if you have not already. They have a climactic sound that will not be featured on small stages much longer. Get it while you can!

Check out this video of the Heavy Pets live on stage at the Funky Buddah Lounge in Boca Raton, FL on 13 August 2010. Central Florida based band, Diocious, opened for them. I will post that video on a later date. Thank you Aura Music Productions for filming and recording these shows!

The Disco Biscuits Fall 2010 Halloween in the South

The Disco Biscuits are excited to let everyone learn of their Halloween dates. They are hooking up a 5 night run leading them through the South East with an opening spot at the Hampton Colliseum opening for SCI on 29 October 2010 for the Hulaween festivities. LMS will be bringing coverage of the Disco Biscuits amongst others like STS9 and Michael Franti following next weekends Blackwater Fest in Sunny Florida. Big up SCI and tDB and STS9. Check out what tDB had to say today about the upcoming tour:

The Disco Biscuits 29 October 2009 - Madison, WI
The Disco Biscuits have announced a five-night, late October run of shows leading into a Halloween night performance in Charlottesville, VA – marking the ten-year anniversary of the band’s first Charlottesville Halloween in 2000.

Presale for these shows has begun at BiscoTix: http://biscotix.musictoday.com/, and general onsales will begin next month.

Those lucky enough to follow the band for the entirety of the five-night run will be there for a monumental week in band history, as the Halloween run takes the Biscuits on a whirlwind tour through the best venues the South has to offer.

The Disco Biscuits will kick things off just a short drive from their Philly homebase at Baltimore’s Rams Head Live! on Wednesday, October 27 before heading south to Norfolk, VA’s NorVa on October 28. There the band will perform the pre-party of the decade one night before joining friends The String Cheese Incident at the Hampton Coliseum for a Friday night throwdown to open their Hulaween festivities.

October 30 sees the Biscuits return to Asheville, NC's Thomas Wolfe Auditorium for their slot at MoogFest 2010. The festival’s stacked lineup is a sight to be seen, and the Biscuits' performance there will mark the band’s return to one of the most gorgeous rooms in town.

The run culminates at the Charlottesville Pavilion on Halloween night, where the Biscuits will mark the 10th anniversary of their Halloween 2000 performance. Ten years ago, the band performed at the now-defunct Trax, smashing pumpkins on stage for a spectacle that fans have talked about since. Times have changed and venues have grown for the Biscuits, but the band will set out to deliver a night to remember for another ten years.

New York Post Article - Phish Fan OK After Leap

A Phish Phan took a 25 foot leap from the balcony during Phish's final night at Jones Beach Ampitheater on August 18th. Here is the NY Post article stating that he is OK.

Video of a Phish Phan being airlifted from Jones Beach on 18 August 2010 - You can hear Phish playing in the background after the helicopter takes off!

 By SELIM ALGAR

Everything's gonna be alright.

The friends of an unhinged Phish fan who tossed himself off a 25-foot balcony at the Jones Beach amphitheater during the jam band's show Wednesday night said it looks as if their pal is going to pull through.

"It's really a miracle, man. He's just got some broken bones, but he's going to be fine," said one pal of the 30-year-old from Maine.

"He's talking; he's sedated, he's sort of out of it. But surprisingly, he was able to talk," the friend said at Nassau University Medical Center. The unidentified jumper and his three friends, also from Maine, are huge Phish fans and attend regional concerts.

The man pushed through the crowd to make the jump. His friends said they didn't know if he was on drugs. A doctor at the scene described the man's face as "busted up."

Phish AUD Recording 8/17/2010 Nikon @ Jones Beach

http://www.phishows.com/

The Jones Beach shows were great...Summer Tour 2010 was all good. I have recently re-become an advocate for the raw goodness of a sick AUD recording of a Phish show. phishows.com throws nasty recordings up almost daily during Phish Tour. What I present to you here is 8/17/2010; super solid. Peep the realness of the recording. It may be the fact that Page is so at home and excited during a blasting "Rock and Roll" that you can hear it in his voice. Maybe it is the goodness during "Backwards Down the Number Line," The "Fluffhead" opener or the "Show of Life, Glogi" encore. It just might have been how perfect "Prince Caspian" was. I don't know, but HERE is a link to a sick AUD recording of the show. In the spirit of the fans who lost it and that kid that jumped from the balcony during last nights show. Pour out a little liquor 'cause Phish killed It'>'>'>'>'>'>

"Find yourself in here. In the Show of Life"

Phish Summer Tour 2010: Part II - Jones Beach - 18 August 2010

08/18/10 Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre, Wantagh, NY

Set I: Down With Disease> Sample in a Jar, Guelah Papyrus, Poor Heart, Ocelot, Chalkdust Torture, Bathtub Gin, Tube, Destiny Unbound, Joy, Run Like An Antelope

Set II: Axilla, Timber (Jerry the Mule)> Light> 46 Days> My Friend My Friend, Harry Hood> Tweezer> The Horse> Silent in the Morning, You Enjoy Myself

Encore: Suzy Greenberg> Tweezer Reprise

Phish wrapped up Summer Tour 2010 last night at the Nikon Theater at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY. The show opened and closed on strong notes. "Down With Disease" is commonly used as a second set opener, was certainly a sign of a strong show to come when used as a show opener here. "Destiny Unbound" appears to be making it's way back into rotation, welcome back homegirl Destiny!
The real candy of the already solid show was the entire second half of the second set and the encore. "Hood" was well placed midway in the set and was a necessity for the final show. With all of the hoopla surrounding "Tweezer" this summer it was welcome even though it was played a few nights earlier at Alpine. I was fortunate enough to have tuned into HoodStream around 11 pm when they were hitting the opening notes of "Tweezer" the segue and first half of the song were highlighted by Mikes spacey bass lines. He was using an effect that was fighting for the funk. Short, sweet and stellar! Just as it was a necessity to play "Hood" it was just as much of one to close out the funky summer with the OG Phish funk "YEM." Great version. The vocal jam was sort of long and pretty stretched out. It sounded like they were emulating a goat having an orgasm! Gross.
Then came the encore. Who doesn't like raging to "Suzy Greenberg?" Thought so. The jam between "Suzy" and show closer "Tweezer Reprise" was so intense that I almost lost myself in the jam leading into "Tweeprise." Intense via live stream, no doubt. But live? It had to be a magical end to a special summer.
They boys will not be hitting the stage again until October 8th when they play the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, TX. LMS will have some shots of that evening to share with you.

Here is how the Tweezer's played out this summer:

Tweezer played - 8 times
Tweezer Reprise played - 10 times

Both nights were sold out solid, but even more impressive is that there were approx. 6,105 computers streaming the show live last night on HoodStream! Only in PhishHeadLand!!!!

Phish Summer Tour 2010 Part II: Jones Beach Night 1, 18 August 2010

08/17/10 Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre, Wantagh, NY

Set I: Fluffhead, Kill Devil Falls, Cities, Funky Bitch, Wilson, Reba, Walk Away, Wolfman's Brother, Possum

Set II: Lengthwise> Maze, Halley's Comet> Mike's Song> Simple> Backwards Down The Number Line> Prince Caspian> Rock and Roll> Weekapaug Groove, Loving Cup

Encore: Show Of Life, Golgi Apparatus

So as Phish Summer Tour 2010 winds down, the band does not! The heat continues to get hotter and another epic set list was played out last night at the Nikon at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY. "Fluffhead" as an opener? Not very often! The big deal of this show though was the lengthy "Mikes Groove." Mikes>Weekapaug has been a Phish staple since waaaaay back and has never really been removed from rotation. It always opens up the possiblity of a continuous jam and leaves Phans wondering what will be played in the middle. As I sat at my computer last night staring at the 30 second intervals for an updated set list, I saw the Mike's>Simple come up. Not thrilling to me as this is a very common segue and seemed to possibly be a lull following a solid first set. Not the case. They went on to sandwich 5 songs between the pair including some real gems. Cannot wait to peep the SBD of this show. Once again they finished the night with a multiple song encore which has been a recurrent theme during the entire second half of summer tour:part II. Tour wraps up tonight. Check back for the setlist. It will be pretty hard to top last night, but I'm sure that they have something extravagant planned.

Phish Jones Beach Poster

Here is the official limited edition print for Jones Beach! Designed specially for Phish by Guy Burwell for the final two nights of Phish Summer Tour 2010: Part II. The two night run will go down (beginning tonight) at the Nikon at Jones Beach in Wantaugh, NY. One of the sickest venues that I have never had the opportunity to make my way inside. I wonder exactly what you see if you stare really hard at this print for an extended period of time. Better yet, I wonder what you see if you stare at this print for an extended period of time following a Phish show!
Bet is that they will tear the building down over the next two nights. Check back for the entire setlist.

Phish Summer Tour 2010 Part II: Alpine Valley Night 2

Phish - Alpine Valley Music Theatre - 15 August 2010

Set One: 1. Tweezer 2. AC/DC Bag 3. On Your Way Down 4. The Divided Sky 5. Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan 6. Water In The Sky 7. The Moma Dance 8. Farmhouse 9. David Bowie

Set Two: 1. Ghost > 2. Theme From The Bottom > 3. Big Black Furry Creature From Mars 4. You Enjoy Myself 5. Piper > 6. 2001 7. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 8. Character Zero

ENCORE: 1. Oh! Sweet Nuthin' 2. Cavern 3. Joy 4. Tweezer Reprise

Another sick show to close out the 2 night run at Alpine Valley for Phish in 2010. Any show that starts and closes with Tweezer is a good listen. They also continued the multi-song encore that has become popular this summer. Although I was not at the show, I would have to say that the "YEM>Piper>2001" had to be a highlight to a second set that opened with "Ghost." C'mon!!
The boys have the night off and close out the tour tomorrow and the following night at Jones Beach in NY. East coast shows take the band home and are never taken light hearted. They really blast it out because they are not only playing for thousands of dedicated fans, but also for close friends and family that will surely be in the front rows. Phans hope that these 2 shows are the fire of the tour. Check back for setlists!

Phish - 9 August 2010 - Telluride, CO - A. Hill Photography

Wow! Is about the only thing that I can say about the above Telluride 2010 Phish photographic experience brought to us by Phellow Photographer Andy Hill. It is a recollection of his journey through the Rocky Mountains into the town of Telluride, then front row at the Phish show. The amazing, mountainous, rainbow filled shots are followed by the boys on stage, up-close and personal. The pics exude exactly what we have heard in the recordings (or if  you were there - live!); they were having a good time!
I have been a personal fan of A.Hill Photography for years and think that I just saw Andy out do himself. Nice shots Andy thank you for letting us share in the groove.

Check out these nasty pics of moe. from their performance in late June at the Buffalo Harbor in Buffalo, NY. It is not clear to me why the boys are dressed up in suits. From the looks of the kickin' crowd shots, fans were in casual attire! Nice work Tammy. Check out the link to Tammy Wetzel's website on the sidebar. You can hook up on clothes, shoes, mouse pads and other gear that she designed there.

Phish Alpine 2010 Poster

Here is the limited edition print to signify Phish's performance at Alpine Valley over the next 2 nights. It was designed by DKNG studios and is a little different than the usual (amazing) Pollock prints. It would be super sweet if there really were a 14,000 ft mountain behind the stage as is depicted in the print. Alpine Valley is still beautiful with all of the rolling hills in the area and I'm sure that Phish will not let down...they're still going full steam ahead. Check back later for tonights setlist...

In light of the upcoming Rhythm of the Road live release of the String Cheese Incidents performance in Atlanta, GA from 17 November 2000 I have decided to hook up a few other SBDs of note from the legendary 2000 tour(s). So here you go, give SCI 11.18.2000 (SBD) a quick listen here, then follow the link below to download it. Enjoy CheeseHeads!

String Cheese Incident Releasing Rhythm of the Road from Their Archives

The String Cheese Incident announces a brand new live archival series with Rhythm of the Road: Volume 1, Incident in Atlanta – 11.17.00. Available 11.09.10 in celebration of the historic show’s ten year anniversary, this will be the first offering in SCI’s new series “Rhythm of the Road” which will be highlighting many of the band’s most celebrated concerts with remastered limited edition releases.

2000 was a big year for SCI as they became a true touring force, settling into larger venues for the first time, including Red Rocks in Colorado, The Warfield in San Francisco, and New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre. The band finished off a long East Coast fall tour with three nights in Athens and Atlanta, GA, and it’s the middle night on 11.17.00 that fans still talk about as one of the best in the band’s career. With special guest Tony Furtado on banjo for several songs and featuring covers of Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, John Coltrane, Peter Rowan, and Peter Gabriel, as well as bluegrass standards and a host of SCI originals, this show is the perfect way to kick off The String Cheese Incident’s archival series “Rhythm of the Road.”

Incident in Atlanta features the entire 11.17.00 performance, lovingly remastered from the original 24-bit multi-track master tapes and made available on CD, download (MP3, FLAC) and, an SCI first, 24-bit FLAC download. It will be released on November 9th in stores, through SCI Merchandise, and http://www.livecheese.com/.

Track List for Rhythm of the Road: Volume 1, Incident in Atlanta – 11.17.00 is as follows:

Set 1: Smile, Joyful Sound > Orange Blossom Special*, Barstool, Pygmy Pony, Missing Me > Ramble On
Set 2: Outside And Inside, Impressions > Glory Chords Jam > Midnight Moonlight*, This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) > Miss Brown's Teahouse, Wake Up, Black Clouds*
Encore: The Old Home Place*, Shenandoah Breakdown*, Shakin' the Tree*
* featuring Tony Furtado on banjo and guitar

Having just completed two sets of sold out summer shows at Red Rocks and Horning’s Hideout, 2010 positions The String Cheese Incident for a future where they will continue to break industry standards, this time with unique, over-the-top Incidents as opposed to traditional tours.

The band will conclude the year with an epic Halloween weekend at Virginia’s Hampton Coliseum. “Hulaween 2010” will feature special guests The Disco Biscuits on Friday, October 29th and Saturday, October 30th will offer a three-set evening with The String Cheese Incident. A limited amount of tickets are still available, please visit www.stringcheeseincident.com for additional information.

Rex Foundation Releases Album to Commemorate the 15th Anniversary of Jerry's Death

August 9, 2010 marked the 15-year anniversary of legendary musician and Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia’s death. As a way to honor his musical and community legacy, the gifted musicians on this compilation have generously contributed stirring live performances of Jerry Garcia songs to benefit the Rex Foundation. Furthering what Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead started 26 years ago, the Rex Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization, endeavors to fund grassroots programs that are often under the radar of larger funding entities, yet work in bold, innovative ways to carry out essential work toward a healthy environment, promotion of the arts, protection of indigenous cultures, assisting others less fortunate, building strong communities, and educating children and adults. The Rex Foundation has distributed $8.6 million in grants to over 1,000 programs across the U.S. and internationally, while also carrying out fundraising initiatives that foster creativity and positive community connections. Visit http://www.rexfoundation.org/ for a complete list of grantees and information about current initiatives.

Jerry Jams for Rex is possible because of the honorable contributions of music, resources and know-how of the participating artists and people involved in the initiative.
